How to use puzzles in the classroom:
- vocabulary activity: record smaller words within a larger word (e.g. use the word clue, equal rights. How many smaller words can be found in this one word?) (visual acuity, compare/contrast known words with what letters are available)
- activate prior knowledge: use puzzle to introduce Black History Month
- augment English language arts curriculum: include the list of words as writing prompts for research topics, report and/or debate writing
- complement English language arts curriculum: students organize the words into different categories based on category: number of letters in the word, part of speech, person/place/thing (requires organizational skills/supports visual acuity)
- support creativity: engage students' creativity by encouraging them to construct their own word search puzzles blank word search grids found here: blank word search (engages creativity)
