Are you looking for engaging and interactive Black History Month classroom resources to support classroom programming? Here is a BHM crosspatch puzzle to complement classroom instruction and vocabulary building, activate critical thinking skills and engage kids in their own learning without them even knowing it! Crossword-like puzzle includes a list of 20 word clues. And, each word clue has the letters scrambled! This puzzle engages a variety of problem solving strategies.

Here are a few active problem solving strategies kids can use:
- use critical thinking to unscramble letters in each word clue (compare the scrambled letters with what words the brain knows related to BHM, make connections in order to decode the sequence to determine the correct word clues)
- use organizational skills to rearrange the word list by the number of letters in each word (4,5,6, etc)
- use trial and error to fill in the blanks (takes perseverance/tenacity)
- use critical thinking to identify words that are unique for their letter count and fill in the blanks (compare and contrast)
- use prior knowledge, observation, trial and error to align known intersection letter points (letters in the puzzle + remaining word clues) and fill in the blanks
-HINT: start with words that are one of a kind (e.g. 4-letter, 5-letter, 6-letter words)
