What are some benefits of using puzzles in the classroom? Puzzles support growth and development of vocabulary, transferable critical thinking skills and improved working memory skills.

Here is an fun, engaging and interactive Black History Month crosspatch puzzles to complement classroom instruction and vocabulary building. Students need to fill in the blanks from a list of 20 word clues. The word clues have scrambled letters.

Students use critical thinking skills to solve the puzzle providing many opportunities for improving working memory skills:
- unscramble the letters in each word clue (visual acuity, memory, prior knowledge)
- organize the words by number of letters in each word (math, visual acuity, organizational skills)
- select words with the least number of letters/most number of letters/unique number of letters to start filling in the blanks (math, critical thinking, organization)
- fill in the blanks with the above words first, when available
- locate intersection points of common letters and continue to fill in the blanks until the puzzle is complete (trial and error, critical thinking, tenacity, perseverance)
-HINT: start with words that are one of a kind (e.g. 4-letter, 5-letter, 6-letter words)

-rearrange the letters to reveal the correct spelling
-record the correct spelling, as required
